Miami Modern Lux Meets Swanky 1950’s – Nautilus, a SIXTY Hotel

June 26, 2016

The minute the doors swung open from the nautical stripe wearing doormen in white pants, I felt I warped back in time and needed a dirty martini in one hand, while sporting a beehive and holding my beach bag in the other. Such a fun, vibrant, swanky vibe the Nautilus, a SIXTY Hotel has against the bright colors of South Beach…I was ready to Beach Blanket Bingo and hit the party! Oh wait, that’s the sixties, well it has the same feel, you get my drift.

Originally built as the Nautilus Hotel, designed by famed architect Morris Lapidus in the 1950’s, the current hotel has been renovated to pay homage to the once property that emulates a luxury beach house. Once past the white reception area, the middle of the lobby to the bar in the center is accented with warm woods, very 50’s large amber glass light fixtures, large palms and lush blue velvet lounge furniture waiting for you and your Tiki drink.

Every corner of the lobby has a unique piece of artwork or sculpture that makes you stop and ponder. The room I stayed was a spacious junior suite with two comfortable queen beds topped with duvets that engulf you. A small living room area with a sofa, ottoman and TV makes a nice spot to gaze out to the gorgeous ocean beach view. The mini bar is an old luggage trunk that opens up to a liquor, coffee, and amenities bar, something I’d love to have in my own home.

It’s go time to slip into my bathing suit and head to the pool and beach! Passing by the lobby lounge, the interactive wall of digital art opens up into an oasis that looks like a chic pool party where I hope I’m on the invite list. Surrounded by bamboo trees, navy and white striped umbrellas and lounge furniture, the salt water pool is a perfect place for a tropical afternoon drink. It’s not too big where it’s overwhelming and the pool service where they set up your lounge chair with towels is something that is a rarity but extremely pleasant.

Walking through the tall bamboo canopy boardwalk, it takes you right to their beach property of white sand soft as sugar. The scene of navy and white striped umbrellas cover the stretch of beach, looking like it’s set for a Town and Country Magazine photo shoot. Their beach service is just as nice and the lounge chairs are just as comfortable.

A quick weekend stay wasn’t enough time at the Nautilus, I am definitely putting this on repeat to come back. The hotel location was perfect, so close to all the other boutique hotels such as The Shore Club, SLS, and the Delano. A great location for a progressive evening out with friends.
